North Tolsta Historical Society

Welcome to the North Tolsta Historical Society

North Tolsta is a village on the Isle of Lewis, one of the islands that form the Western Isles, or Outer Hebrides, of Scotland. Over the years we, the local history society, have amassed a wealth of heritage research.

Now, we can share this archive knowledge of family, emigration, and Gaelic that was shaped by lives spent crofting, fishing, and of service in two Worlds Wars and the Merchant Navy.

We welcome your comments and any additional genealogical or historical information that you may be able to add to the rich tapestry of life that has been the hallmark of Tolsta for many generations.

World War 1 Archive

From the brave souls who served on the front lines to the families who waited anxiously at home, this chapter of our history is filled with stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. Help us as we delve into the archives to uncover personal accounts, letters, and photographs that bring to life the experiences of those who lived through this tumultuous time. Your contributions and insights are invaluable in preserving this legacy for future generations.

LAND AND SEA

Fishing and crofting have been the mainstays of the local economy for generations. Here we try to give a flavour of that tradition as it pertains to Tolsta rather than as a broad academic study of these subjects which have already been executed by other organisations.
